Katori Shinto Ryu is one of the oldest and most famous Japanese martial arts, introduced to the West by Don Draeger. With over 650 years of history, it was created by Iizasa Choisai Ienao after 1000 days of intense training. This martial art is known for its paired kata exercises, where partners practice many moves together. It includes a wide range of techniques from different weapons, such as swords, staffs, and spears. This variety comes from its battlefield origins when martial arts were used in combat, not just for self-defense. Practitioners learn to handle different weapons and techniques, often aiming for openings in armor. Katori Shinto Ryu's techniques have been carefully preserved over generations and are practiced by many people both in Japan and around the world. --------------------------------------------------------- Red Oak is oil treated. White Oak, however, is completely untreated. For a 'how to' guide on waxing wooden weapons, please check out our walk-through video, "How to wax Bokuto."
